A Neapolitan nativity scene symbolizing Mercy, destined for New York City for the Jubilee year proclaimed by Pope Francis in 2015. The work was commissioned by Monsignor Donald Sakano of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Little Italy, where it remained on display for three years. It was subsequently moved to Virginia, to the Binns of Williamsburg, curated by Thomas Smith, where it remains today.
Among the many symbolic details, the homage to Saint Francis stands out, as does the reference to Caravaggio’s famous painting The Seven Works of Mercy and Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son.
